Love That Values All People

Date

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

While John 3:16 is one of the most well-known; most quoted and loved passages of scripture in the Bible; Romans 5:8, is the passage of scripture that every time I meditate on, brings tears to my eyes. It speaks of a love that is so amazing that words can never adequately express.

God sent Jesus to die for us, not because we were good enough, but because he loved us so much.  He sees value in everyone. That value comes from God in His creation of us when He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,…So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:26-27. That image was marred by sin and separated us from the One who created us. But God, “Commendeth his love toward us” while we were “powerless” (v.6), “ungodly” (v. 6), “sinners” (v. 8), and “enemies” (v.10).

God’s love for us is totally unmotivated by anything in us, despite all the wrongs we’ve done. He still values us!

Commendeth is a very interesting word, some versions use the word demonstrated, which tells us that the highest manifestation of God’s love is shown by Jesus’ death on the cross.  What I love about this word, in the Greek translation it means, “Together with”, “meaning to stand with”, “to introduce”, “to present as worthy”.

Religious folk, don’t want to have anything to do with rebellious sinners. They don’t want to be seen with the outcaste of society. Do I need to call the roll? But God, says while others have turned you away as being  good-for-nothing, low-life, lewd,  useless, unfit, criminal, a serial killer on death row, too bad to ever have any redeemable qualities, written you off as worthless, and maybe you even feel this way about yourself, but, God says you are valuable to me! God say’s while others wouldn’t be caught dead hanging out with you, I came to where you were, to stand with you and let you know you are loved.  I came to where you are, to take you where I am! I died, for your sins, that you might live with me in eternity!

Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? Jesus said, “They that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:30-32
