Whats Love Got to Do With It?

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” I Corinthians 13: 1-2 NIV

During this unprecedented time of sheltering in, we have witnessed a series of documentaries televised on Netflix, Max and HBO. On March 27, 2021, another documentary is scheduled to premiere, “Tina”, (The Legacy of Tina Turner).  Rolling Stone’s listed, “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The song was written in the aftermath of an emotional and physical marriage with Ike Turner.

As a result of her childhood experience and a devastating marriage, she questions the reality of real love.  She would never again put herself in an emotionally-vulnerable position to be hurt again. Therefore all relationship with men from that point would be purely physical. Some of the most revealing lines in this song are, “Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? What’s love but a second hand emotion?”

At this point in her life, Anna Mae Bullock, moved from desiring a transformational type of love to relationships that are, transactional. Transactional relationships are what I will call cordial but heartless relationships, built around a mutual understanding that amounts to no more than a business deal.  Individuals in this relationship are self-serving, “What’s in it for me?” Sadly to say, many people, our children, young and old have given up on love because they have never been introduced to or known real love. The greatest love of all-time, Jesus Christ! Having a loving relationship with Jesus, is a transformational type of love that allows you to live life and experience love at the highest level. Agape, is the kind of love that is committed to seeking the highest good of the other person, an unconditional selfless love that only comes from a personal relationship with God.

Tina Turner was born, Anna Mae Bullock. She later changed her name to, “Tina” which means, “Follower of Christ”.  She was brought up in the church and adopted a name that suggests knowledge of the True and Living God, and of Jesus the Christ.  All roads don’t lead to heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 Love has everything to do with it! No one can know real love apart from knowing the love of God.  EVERYTHING – LOVE = NOTHING!  JESUS + NOTHING = EVERYTHING. Jesus is Love! Love is still available!
